Elizabeth Workman

Biography

Elizabeth Workman was a Graduate Assistant for the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute. She received her bachelor's degree in political science from UNC Charlotte in 2010. Her research interests include local and state government, urban and suburban issues, and social demographics.

    March is Women’s History Month. Its origins date back more than 30 years, when President Carter proclaimed the second week of March as National Women’s History Week in 1980.  Seven years later, as the result of a persistent national lobbying effort, Congress passed a public law designating the month of March as Women’s History Month. Since 1987, each president has issued annual proclamations calling upon citizens to observe and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of American women.

    Are people who are unemployed or financially distressed more likely to vote than those who have jobs or are financially sound? According to data going back to the 1992 general election, they are not.

    In Mecklenburg County, women are appointed to city and county boards at the same rate that they are applying.  If more women run for board positions, more are likely to be appointed, and it takes just three women on a board to really influence decisions being made.  This was just one of the messages presented to the more than five hundred people who attended the 2012 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Women’s Summit conference, held at UNC Charlotte on April 13.
