Hear how one city tamed its mean streets

If New York, famous for traffic congestion and less-than courteous drivers, can do it, why can’t Charlotte?

A public discussion Tuesday, April 4, in uptown Charlotte will feature the New York traffic official who oversaw 400 miles of new bike lanes, helped launch the country’s largest bike-share program and transformed 180 acres of asphalt into places for pedestrians and bicycles.

Janette Sadik-Khan, author of Street Fight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution, will speak at the event 6-7:30 p.m. at McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square.  The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. The first 300 attendees will receive a free copy of Sadik-Khan’s book.

In the book, Sadik-Khan and longtime colleague Seth Solomonow tell how she made it happen in New York, and offer ways other cities and city neighborhoods can become more sustainable and better connected. Learn more about Sadik-Khan at this link, at this link and at this link.

The Tuesday night schedule:

  • 6-6:30 p.m.  –  Pre-event reception, light refreshments will be served
  • 6:30-7:30 p.m. – Janette Sadik-Khan feature presentation

This event is part of the “Building Community: People + Places + Partners Speaker Series,” presented by the City of Charlotte and Charlotte Center City Partners in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
