UNC Charlotte - Committed to Public Service

As Chancellor of UNC Charlotte, I’m pleased to welcome you to one of our latest contributions to the university’s long tradition of public service and outreach to the greater Charlotte region – the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute’s new website.

UNC Charlotte has always taken seriously its commitment to public service on behalf of the people of Charlotte, the surrounding region, and the State of North Carolina.  One of the early embodiments of that commitment was Chancellor Dean Colvard’s establishment of the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute in 1969, the University’s first applied public policy research center.  Over the course of its forty-plus years, the Institute has been a leader in helping the Charlotte region find solutions to the economic, environmental and social challenges facing our communities.   The redesign of the Institute’s website to serve as a portal to the outstanding research being conducted under the auspices of the Institute and as a source for news and commentary about public policy issues facing the greater Charlotte region is a continuation of the Institute’s original mission.  That mission of public service and outreach remains as relevant as ever and is at the heart of any great public urban research university.

UNC Charlotte’s marketing efforts encourage the public to “stake its claim” to UNC Charlotte as an important cultural and economic resource for this community.  The new UNC Charlotte Urban Institute website helps to showcase the Institute’s continuing relevance to the new and continuing challenges facing a rapidly growing region.  We hope you find it to be useful.
