Four proposals emerge to rebuild Eastland Mall site
Four development groups on Monday offered proposals to the City Council’s Economic Development Committee for what they would build on the former Eastland Mall site.
The City of Charlotte purchased the 80-acre site in 2012 for $13.2 million after the mall closed in 2010. The old mall building was demolished, and the current development site is 69 acres. Another 11 acres of the original site was transferred to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, which is building a magnet school for grades K-8.
In 2014 the city seriously considered selling to Studio Charlotte, a group that proposed sound stages and movie studios which film executive Bert Hesse proposed would spark retail and residential development. But the city backed out due to concerns about the project’s viability.
The four development groups that presented Monday:

- Eastland Community Development Inc.
- Greater Charlotte Multiplex 4 FamiliE’s
- Legacy Family Group and handout
One of the plans, presented by the Greater Charlotte Multiplex 4 FamiliE’s, would only use 10 to 15 acres and consist mainly of gathering places for teens, adults and senior citizens.
The other three plans had a residential focus. The plan from Eastland Community Development Inc. called for 1,000 residences, while the Legacy Family Group proposed 800 residences. Crosland Southeast and Jim Gross Co. didn’t offer definitive numbers.
The city staff will continue reviewing and vetting the proposals. The timeline calls for the Economic Development Committee to offer its recommendation in April or May, with full City Council action set for June or July.
